Practical Tips From a Decade of GTA Online

These are lessons from GTA 5 Online that stayed consistent across its entire 10+ year lifespan. They're not exploits or temporary strategies — they're fundamental principles that applied from 2013 through 2024 and should carry over to GTA 6 Online.

Note: GTA 6 hasn't launched yet. These tips assume GTA 6 Online will follow similar design patterns to GTA 5 Online, which is reasonable given Rockstar's track record.

Getting Started — First Hour Tips

1. Complete the Tutorial Fully

In GTA 5 Online, the tutorial missions awarded significant starting cash and RP. Some players skipped them to get into the open world faster. This was a mistake — the tutorial rewards gave you a meaningful head start, and the missions taught mechanics you'd use constantly.

In GTA 6: Whatever tutorial or onboarding process exists, complete it fully. Don't rush past it. The early rewards matter most when everyone starts at zero.

2. Set Your Spawn Location Strategically

In GTA 5 Online, your spawn location determined where you loaded in every session. Setting it to your most-used property or business location saved travel time on every single login.

In GTA 6: As soon as you have a property, set your spawn there. Over hundreds of sessions, the time savings add up to hours.

3. Use Passive Mode When Needed

Passive Mode prevented other players from attacking you (and you from attacking them). It was essential for:

  • Traveling across the map without being griefed
  • Exploring new areas safely
  • Moving between objectives without PvP interruption
  • Protecting yourself while AFK

No shame in using it. Dying to a random griefer wastes time and money. Passive Mode exists for a reason.

Making Money — Core Principles

4. Buy a Business Before a Car

This is the single most important financial lesson from GTA 5 Online. Your first major purchase should be something that generates income. A $500K business pays for itself over time. A $500K sports car sits in your garage looking pretty while earning nothing.

The math is simple: If a business generates $50K per game session, it pays for itself in 10 sessions. The sports car never pays for itself.

5. Track Your Earnings Per Hour, Not Per Mission

A mission that pays $200K sounds twice as good as one paying $100K. But if the $200K mission takes an hour and the $100K mission takes 15 minutes:

  • $200K mission: $200K/hour
  • $100K mission: $400K/hour

Always calculate efficiency by the hour. This one mental shift separates casual grinders from efficient earners. Time is your scarcest resource.

6. Watch Weekly Bonus Rotations

Rockstar rotated double and triple payout events on specific activities every week in GTA 5 Online. During these events:

  • Missions paying $30K suddenly paid $60-90K
  • Business sales doubled or tripled in value
  • Otherwise mediocre activities became the best earners

Strategy: Whatever is boosted this week is your primary grind. Drop everything else and capitalize on the multiplier. Following weekly bonuses was consistently one of the most reliable wealth-building strategies.

7. Solo Public Sessions Were a Game-Changer

In GTA 5 Online, selling business goods in a public session attracted griefers who could destroy your stock for a small reward. Players discovered methods to get into "solo public sessions" — public lobbies with no other players — which allowed safe sales without interference.

In GTA 6: If a similar system exists (sell missions in public lobbies), expect the community to find solo-lobby methods quickly. These methods were widely used and practically universal among serious players.

Combat Tips

8. Eat Snacks in Cover

In GTA 5 Online, consuming snacks (which restored health) had a long animation when standing in the open, but was instant when behind cover. This meant:

  • In cover: Instant full health restore
  • In the open: Multi-second vulnerable animation

This single mechanic knowledge won countless PvP encounters and made difficult missions trivial. If GTA 6 has any similar healing mechanic, learn its shortcuts immediately.

9. Always Carry Full Armor

Armor was cheap (a few thousand dollars) and could absorb an entire extra burst of gunfire. Before every mission, heist, or anything combat-related, buying full armor from the interaction menu was a no-brainer.

Cost vs. benefit: $500 in armor could save you from a $10,000+ death penalty and mission restart. There was never a reason not to armor up.

10. Know When to Switch Sessions

If another player has significantly better gear, is using a weaponized vehicle you can't counter, or is specifically targeting you:

  • Leave. Find a new session.
  • There's no reward for dying repeatedly to a griefer
  • Your time is better spent earning money in a peaceful lobby
  • Your pride isn't worth your progress

This isn't cowardice — it's efficiency. Every death costs time and money. A new session takes 30 seconds to load.

Efficiency Tips

11. Learn the Map Immediately

Players who memorized GTA 5's map had measurable advantages:

  • Faster mission completion times (knew the shortest routes)
  • Better heist getaways (knew which alleys connected where)
  • More efficient business operations (knew traffic patterns)
  • Better PvP positioning (knew defensive positions and choke points)

In GTA 6: Spend your first few sessions just exploring Leonida. Learn the highway system, key intersections, shortcuts, and landmarks. This knowledge pays dividends for the entire life of the game.

12. Use Aircraft for Travel

Flying is dramatically faster than driving across any GTA map. In GTA 5 Online:

  • Driving across the full map: ~8-10 minutes
  • Flying across the full map: ~2-3 minutes

Over hundreds of sessions, using aircraft for travel saved days of cumulative time. The Buzzard helicopter ($1.75M) was arguably the best single investment in GTA 5 Online because of the time it saved.

In GTA 6: Leonida's reportedly larger map makes efficient travel even more critical. An affordable helicopter should be a top-tier early purchase.

13. Join a Crew

In GTA 5 Online, being in a crew provided:

  • Bonus RP from all activities
  • A reliable pool of teammates for heists and missions
  • Help with business sales and defenses
  • Social connection that kept the game fun long-term

The lone wolf approach worked, but crew players consistently progressed faster and had more fun. If GTA 6 Online is anything similar, finding your crew before launch is a genuine advantage.

Smart Habits

14. Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Account security matters more around major launches. In GTA 5 Online, Rockstar even gave players a free $500K in-game just for enabling 2FA. Protect your:

  • PlayStation/Xbox account
  • Rockstar Social Club account
  • Email associated with both

A compromised account can lose years of progress.

15. Don't Trust Random Invites

In GTA 5 Online, some players used invitations to lure others into traps — kill zones, modded lobbies, or situations designed to grief.

Rule of thumb: Only accept invites from players you know or crew members. Random invites from strangers are a gamble you don't need to take.

16. Complete Daily Objectives

In GTA 5 Online, daily objectives were three simple tasks (complete a race, call a contact, buy ammo). Individually small, but:

  • Daily completion: ~$30K + RP
  • 7-day streak: $150K bonus
  • 28-day streak: $750K bonus

These tasks took 10-15 minutes and required minimal effort. The monthly streak bonus alone was significant. If GTA 6 has a similar system, make dailies part of your routine.

17. Invest in Utility Before Weaponized Vehicles

Utility vehicles earn money. Weaponized vehicles spend money.

  • A cargo helicopter earns you money by making deliveries faster
  • An Oppressor Mk II costs $4M and earns nothing

The weaponized vehicles are fun, but they're endgame purchases. Utility first, firepower second.
